Biological and Environmental Science (BES) is a multi-disciplinary department based at the University of Stirling with over 130 active research staff and PhD students. Our research ranges from insects to mammals, from people to ecosystems, and even the whole Earth and other planets. We explore the processes driving the evolution and maintenance of biodiversity, from the molecular to the ecosystem level. We look at how environments and ecosystems have changed over time to predict and mitigate the future impacts of climate change. Our departmental research groups include

The overall aim of the BES research seminar series is to support and enhance our department’s research environment by inviting external speakers to present the latest research and network with us. The specific objectives are to:  

  1. Keep BES staff and students informed and connected with cutting-edge research nationally and internationally 
  2. Foster a culture of research which is valued by staff, students, external partners, and members of the public  
  3. Foster a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research environment within the department 
  4. Promote the department as a hub of world-leading research 
  5. Help generate new thinking on research topics, methods, and collaborations
