Inequalities in place-based planning policies focused on local living, such as the 20-minute neighbourhood

Jonathan Olsen, Senior Research Fellow, MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit, University of Glasgow

Wednesday 1st May, 1-2pm, Cottrell 2V1 and streamed on Teams (contact the seminar organiser for the Teams link).
This seminar is open to all staff, students and affiliates of the University of Stirling. The seminar is hosted by Biological and Environmental Sciences (BES).

Who this might appeal to: Seminar provides an equity lens on local living policies, such as the 20-minute neighbourhoods, and other place-based policies that are floated as improving health and reducing health inequalities.

Abstract: Globally, there has been a recent resurgence in planning policies focused on local living (such as the 20-minute neighbourhood) with proposed benefits of creating sustainable and healthy places. This approach is well established and originates from the concept of compact and liveable cities. The policies aim to provide improved access to local amenities within short walkable distances of home to encourage walking and cycling and discourage car use. This seminar will explore inequalities in the health benefiting and health damaging features of both adult and children’s 20-minute neighbourhoods. As well as exploring whether the density and diversity of local amenities is associated with sustainable transport behaviour. Finally, the talk will explore how to ensure 20-minute neighbourhoods are healthy.

Bio: Jon is a Senior Research Fellow and leads the Mobility in the Urban Environment workstream within the Places and Health Programme at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (SPHSU). Jon’s research has a policy focused approach, leading the application of novel geospatial approaches to explore the impact of planning policy for health and urban mobility. For example, leading work to provide a baseline assessment of the 20-minute neighbourhood policy in Scotland.
